This is what is left of the Church of Buonacompra (Ferrara) about four miles from the Castle of Galeazza, and my neighbour Dario’s barn. We’ve lost so much in this area: 300 year-old churches, beautiful old farmhouses and barns, medieval castles, Renaissance clock towers, baroque campanili, 19th century villas and town halls, old schools, hospitals, new factories… 17 people have died so far, and about 20,000 people are now without homes. Nearly everyone in this area is sleeping in tents or campers, scared to go back into their homes for more than the absolute necessary… the quakes today- especially the 4 am earthquake- remind me it’s going to be a long time before this is over…
